Diversity is Key to Hilton’s Success

Diversity has been key to Hilton’s success over the company’s 96-plus years, and continues to be an area of focus as the hospitality leader continues to expand and grow. With more than 4,440 hotels in 100 countries, having a diverse workforce enables the company to meet and exceed guests’ expectations.

“It is what allows us to perform and deliver for our customers and, frankly, outperform the competition,” said Hilton President & CEO Chris Nassetta. “In order to do that, it has to become part of the muscle memory of our organization.”

Nassetta heads an executive diversity council to keep the need for diversity top of mind for senior company leaders. Team Members throughout the organization are also involved through more than 20 chapters of Resource Groups. These specialized groups allow the needs of all Team Members to be heard, and provides a bonding and learning experience for many employees.

“In my opinion, the big mistake that companies make—and I’ve seen it happen many, many times—is that diversity becomes a subset of different programs. Diversity, if done properly and reinforced properly, basically takes care of itself because everybody in an organization realizes that the organization is better, stronger and faster as a result of the diverse nature of its workforce,” said Nassetta. “This way people seek it out instead of it becoming just a series of programs that they need to adhere to.”

Energy Saving Technology Helps Hilton Raise the Bar on Efficiency

Hilton has announced it will upgrade its systems and technology at its more than 4,440 hotels around the world to LightStay, which will allow each hotel to measure its environmental performance, including energy and water use.

LightStay is a state-of-the-art, in-house measurement platform that enables each hotel to measure and forecast usage based on weather, occupancy and other conditions. It alerts management to the hotel’s overall performance and consumption, and allows them to make educated decisions and take corrective actions to influence future performance.

These efforts are part of Hilton’s work with the U.S. Department of Energy through the Better Buildings Challenge, where they are striving to meet a 20 percent energy savings goal in ten years.

“Hilton is a great leader in energy management in the hospitality industry and is setting a new bar,” said Kathleen Hogan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency at the U.S. Department of Energy. “DOE looks forward to recognizing Hilton for its achievements as it expands its Better Buildings partnership to pilot the new Superior Energy Performance (SEP) certification program for the hospitality industry.”

Hilton Unveils Industry-Leading Parental Leave Policies

MCLEAN, Va. - Hilton (NYSE: HLT) today announced parental leave policies that will be the best offered by any major global hospitality company in the United States and Puerto Rico.

The benefits will be available to Team Members at owned and managed hotels and corporate offices(1) with one year of service or greater. Beginning on January 1, 2016, the benefits will include:

• All new parents - including fathers and adoptive parents - will receive two weeks of fully paid parental leave.
• New mothers who give birth will receive an additional eight weeks of maternity leave, for a total of 10 weeks of fully paid leave.

Hilton's parental leave benefits will cover approximately 40,000 Team Members in the United States across the company's owned and managed hotels and corporate offices.

Throughout the month of May, Hilton properties and offices hosted more than 750 events globally totaling 22,365 volunteer hours and reaching more than 90,000 young people. Careers@Hilton Live is just one program in support of the company's Open Doors commitment to impact one million young people around the world by 2019 and better prepare them to reach their full potential.

Wrapping up the month, Hilton's own millennial Team Members shared their career advice with other job seekers through a series of videos.
