testimonialpic_1 Johnny Chao
Director Finance

Hello, my name is Johnny Cao. I am the Director of Finance in Hilton Beijing, China.

My hospitality life started from year 2004 and I joined Hilton in July 2012. I was honored to participate in a Finance Management Program and I have to say that I have benefited a lot from it. During the training period, I not only learned about Hilton’s culture and requirements, but also have gotten to know some great people (who are our trainers, guest speakers, colleagues and our classmates). I was more confident about my career development in Hilton after this three month period.

After graduating from the training, I was assigned as a Director of Finance for the DoubleTree by Hilton, Kunshan Huaqiao. It was the first Hilton hotel where I could put all that I have learned into practice. During a nine month period, I successfully provided valuable business suggestions by ensuring efficient and effective hotel operations. Then, I moved to Hilton Beijing, in July 2013. This was a bigger role for me as it is one of the top 10 hotels in Greater China. I did face a lot of challenges, especially during the tough economic environment in the area and government cutbacks. However, all costs and expenses were well under budget to ensure reasonable Hilton EBITDA and owner’s return on investment.

I do believe I made the right decision by joining Hilton. Here, you will discover lots of people who have passion in their work and you will be pleased with the professionalism of your peers.

I would say the only regret to me would be: why did not I move to Hilton earlier?

testimonialpic_2 Andrea Adler
HR Director

My name is Andrea Adler and I have been Director, Human Resources at Hilton Berlin in Germany for more than 5 years.

I have already more than 15 years with Hilton, all together, and believe me that was not my plan. Normally I stayed 2-3 years with a company and then it was time to change. However, from my first day on I had wonderful people around me. These were people I had fun working with and people who supported me in my career. There was no reason for me to leave because it was the right environment.

My background is operations. I loved working as Front Office Manager and leading a team of more than 40 Team Members, and I thought of becoming a General Manager. In 2007 I became a mother and this changed my life – it is the greatest gift of all but jobwise not always easy to handle. So I thought about my future career. I knew I wanted to stay with Hilton.

I reflected on my past working experience and thought about what I liked most about my job and what I am good at. I also asked people around me what they thought my strengths are. People - that was the keyword. Working with people, leading people, supporting people to grow and create a happy and inspiring working environment. So welcome to my world – welcome to Human Resources!

Changing from Front Office to HR was not easy. It took me some time to convince my leaders that I was the right candidate for the open HR Manager position. I had many talks, studied hard and finally passed the assessment. I was so happy, excited and proud when I had my first day in my new role as HR Manager, Hilton Berlin. And you know what - I am still happy in my job and don’t want to do anything else!

Believe in yourself, remember your strengths and what you enjoy doing. Watch, listen and study to learn and develop yourself. Have fun and just be yourself!

testimonialpic_9 Vincent Zhou
General Manager

I am Vincent Zhou, and I’ve just started a new role as the pre-opening General Manager of Hilton YanTai. Prior to that, and I was the Director of Business Development at DoubleTree by Hilton in Beijing, China.

I joined Hilton Beijing as a concierge supervisor in 1998; it was just after my graduation from college, where I majored in economics. At that time I was not sure which direction I was heading, I would say Hilton Beijing was the birthplace of my career journey.

I’ve grown and developed during my time with Hilton in a dynamic way, beginning with concierge all the way up to my current position as a General Manager; it has been 17 years of great fun, challenges and learning about this industry and also myself. Besides that, this journey led me to meet a person who became my wife while we both worked at Hilton Beijing!

I began at the entry level as a Concierge Supervisor and eventually became Guest Service Manager, then Front Office Manager, before changing departments to become a Room Division Manager. In 2011, I got the great opportunity to be the pre-opening Director of Operations for DoubleTree by Hilton Shenyang.

One of the most significant milestones was being internally transferred from Director of Operations to Director of Business Development DoubleTree by Hilton Beijing. At that time, I had no sales experience. It was a dramatic role change for me and presented many unpredictable challenges, especially as I was given the role when the market for hotel business was particularly difficult, yet through perseverance and thanks to a strong sales team we were able to achieve our revenue targets.

Hilton has offered me tremendous career opportunities, and along the way has provided comprehensive training and development courses such as leadership courses, e-learning opportunities, webinars, PAL and the Shine GM program. These learning activities were key to my successful development and helped me make that big step into the upper management level.

Hilton is a place that can bring out your best every day, a place where your strengths are appreciated, and where people welcome the true you. Get involved in training. The variety of training courses available with Hilton is something you won’t find anywhere else!

Above all of that, my advice is very connected to my personality: it is not about being perfect, or running after a title just for the sake of it, but it is about finding happiness in what you do and doing it with your heart. There will be no limits or challenges that can stop a passionate soul.

testimonialpic_10 Gillian Fraser
Assistant Food and Beverage Manager

Hello my name is Gillian Fraser and I am currently the Assistant Food and Beverage Manager looking after the conference and events operation at the Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor in Scotland.

Hilton has impacted my life because it has allowed me to grow into a successful leader and achieve my career goals. Hilton has helped me to map my career path and through the fantastic development and networking opportunities I have managed to progress at a good pace and be successful in my roles.

I started my career with Hilton on the UK&I Management Development Programme. This was a 14 month programme in two placement hotels where I gained management experience by working across different operational departments. I was lucky enough to be placed in the Hilton London Syon Park and the DoubleTree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro in Scotland.

I decided early on that my heart was in conference and events operations and I secured a great and challenging role at the Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor at the end of my 2nd placement. After 14 months at the Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor I am now looking forward to starting my new role in 2016 at the Hilton Glasgow as Conference and Banqueting Operations Manager. I managed to secure both of these roles by networking at every opportunity as well as ensuring that my hard work was being recognised and making sure that my name was coming up in succession planning. In each role my goal is to make a positive difference that will contribute to success – if you do this you will be recognised.

If you are looking for a career at Hilton, my advice would be to show that you live the Hilton values inside and out. Any successful team member or leader in Hilton lives the values everyday. If you are looking to progress there are so many opportunities to learn and develop – you have to go and get them!

testimonialpic_11 Harold Jiang
Chief Engineer

My name is Harold Jiang, and I am the Chief Engineer at DoubleTree by Hilton, Chongqing North.

In 2001, I was very lucky to join the first Hilton property in Chongqing, and the fifth in China. I have grown up from a Duty Engineer to an Assistant Chief Engineer and finally to Chief Engineer now. Every day I have felt proud of my hotel, greeting each new day and examining all the facilities.

During some hard times, when team members resigned and business declined, I was lucky that I got help from my colleagues and gained the benefit of hotel trainings. I told myself, I need to face the reality and learn to change. Later, as a manager, I’ve helped others grow and change. Through my continuous learning and practice, I have grown consistently and been a professional hotelier.

I would like to give some suggestions for the people who join Hilton:

Loyalty: love what you are doing, and try to do it best.
Change: keep an open heart in the smooth and tough times, dare to change and adapt.
Never give up learning: Keep learning!

I believe that through these efforts we can achieve Hilton’s vision to “fill the earth with the light and warmth of hospitality.”
